DERMAGENESIS is the proprietary name of the most advanced device for superficial skin "sanding" with microparticles of aluminum oxide. This process is usually used to remove the outer layers of epidermis to "freshen" the skin, removing the dead cells, sun damage, and some irregular pigmentation, and leaves the skin with a healthy glow. It requires no sedation nor local anesthesia and is not painful. The face and neck may be treated, or just the face. Not only does it leave the skin smoother, and remove superficial pigmentation, it also cleans the pores and helps shrink them.

Subsequent applications of makeup are more uniform in application. All skin types and colors may be treated. There is no recovery. Makeup and/or moisturizer can be applied right after a treatment, which lasts 45 to 60 minutes. There are no reported complications, except for the occasional bruise or minor abrasion (particularly for deeper treatments). The device can be used for deeper abrasions by the physician, however, it is usually used by the aesthetician, for superficial freshening. A course of 6 to 10 treatments is recommended. These can be done at least a week apart, or longer. A per-treatment savings is realized if the client buys a series in advance. Progressively more improvement is seen with a series of treatments.

The limitations of the device is that it does not go deep enough with superficial treatments to permanently improve wrinkles (it could with deeper or multiple treatments) but erases very superficial pigmentation , discolored or sallow skin, and leaves smooth skin with a healthy glow. It does on the other hand, leave some swelling which disguises fine wrinkles. The device is too new to know whether a series of superficial treatments followed by occasional follow up treatments will give long lasting improvement in fine wrinkles but there is reason to be hopeful that it could.
